Belknap & Covi Galleries
Reception & Gallery Talk: Thursday, September 4, 5-8 pm

"The Medium is the Message" opens September 4, in the Hite Galleries on UofL’s Belknap campus, with a 5 till 8 p.m. reception during which the collector, Allan Weiss, will lead a short gallery talk about his interest in this usual art form. His interest in collecting envelopes decorated with drawn and painted images began with his initial discovery of envelopes by a Louisville group called the Art Cover Exchange, (an international assembly of artists formed in the mid 1930’s by Hillcrest Ave resident, Leonard Turley) and turned into a consuming passion that has led him to gather several thousand decorated envelopes.
The exhibition selects several hundred examples to display in order to examine the range of expression, humor, subject matter and style created by often unknown correspondents. As a rather unique form of folk art that has been little explored as an area for collecting, Weiss has found the mix of private and public in these miniature artworks fascinating.
The exhibition will continue in Schneider Hall’s Belknap Gallery through October 5. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday – Friday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
